How Underground Utility Locating Works
The locating process begins with a consultation to understand your project scope, site conditions, and any known or suspected services in the area. From there, the Locate X team selects the most appropriate combination of locating methods to suit the site. Electromagnetic locating (EML) is used to trace conductive services such as power cables, metallic pipes, and communications lines by applying a signal and tracking it above ground with a specialised receiver.
For non-conductive services such as PVC pipes and non-metallic conduits, ground penetrating radar (GPR) is used to scan beneath the surface and identify subsurface features that EML alone cannot detect. By combining both methods, Locate X ensures nothing is missed across your site. Furthermore, all findings are documented in AS5488-aligned reports with clear on-site markings, giving you and your team an accurate, reliable record to work from throughout the project.
